SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — Slippery Rock University's first-team offense earned an early night off.

No. 8 SRU football scored on nine of its 10 possessions in the first three quarters en route to a 59-14 PSAC West home rout of Seton Hill Saturday night at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The Rock (6-0, 3-0) went to their reserves in the fourth quarter after churning out 675 yards of offense, including 434 rushing against Seton Hill (2-4, 1-2).

Even with the front-liners’ early exit, SRU wound up setting a program single-game record of 458 rushing yards. The previous mark of 456 was set at East Stroudsburg in 2014.

“Wow! That’s all I can say about that,” SRU head coach Shawn Lutz said. “We love making history, and to get yardage like that with an inexperienced offensive line? That’s not too shabby, not too shabby at all.”

The Rock’s starting five offensive linemen — center Soren Stoltzus, guards Brian Frasco and Christian Werling, and tackles Varrius Farrell and Jake Jonassen — did not start a single game last season.

Running back JayJay Jordan rushed for 200 yards and scored four touchdowns, three of them rushing. His 16 rushing touchdowns lead all of Division II, and he has now scored in 12 successive games.

“I knew we were gonna have to lean on them,” Jordan said of the offensive line. “We’ve been leaning on them all year. That’s not going to change.

“I can’t say it enough ... I have so much fun playing this game, and I’m grateful for what those guys are doing up front.”

Seton Hill (2-3, 1-2) entered the game with the second-best pass defense in D-II, allowing an average of 91 yards per game. SRU quarterback DaOne Owens threw for 227 yards and three touchdowns against the Griffins.

Owens also scored on a 63-yard run and rushed for 104 yards.

“Having a back like JayJay and our running game, it makes my life so easy,” Owens said. “They (the Griffins) had my number circled tonight. There was a spy on me, but it didn’t matter. Our offense can go in a lot of directions.”

Backup running back Luke McCoy got in on the act, scoring on a 66-yard run and gaining 54 yards after catching a flare pass to set up SRU’s final touchdown of the night. The Rock wound up with 723 yards of total offense to Seton Hill’s 301.

“Luke is a great player. He could start for anybody,” Lutz said. “He and JayJay have a great relationship, and I love that.”

Seton Hill quarterback Boden St. Marie scored on runs of 11 and 19 yards. Freshman running back Timothy Gaynor ran for 104 yards, his second successive 100-yard rushing effort.

The Griffins allowed only 22 net yards in shutting out California (Pa.) a week ago.

“We didn’t execute tonight like we did last week,” Seton Hill head coach Kevin May said. “Too many missed tackles, and when you do that against an offense with so many weapons, that’s a bad mix.

“We gave up twice as many explosive plays tonight as we have the entire season to this point.”

Elijah Halley had SRU’s one sack. Carmen Metcalfe had an interception for The Rock.

SRU improved to 15-2 all-time against Seton Hill. Lutz picked up his 50th win at home against only eight losses as Rock head coach. SRU has scored more than 40 points in every game this season.

“I’m not trying to sound cocky, but I know we can get better,” Lutz said. “We’ll never stop working at trying to improve.”
