Butler County's great daily newspaper

In response to Matthew Dec & Sam

ameshaa@aol.com

Matthew Dec writes that some physiological aspects of humans aren't "designed" for certain uses and that transgressing these boundaries is a sin. While Mr. Dec uses examples of homosexual acts and sexually transmitted diseases to illustrate his point, if taken to its logical conclusion his position would label all medical intervention a sin. Veins weren't "meant" to have intravenous lines in them. Hearts weren't "meant" to have pig valves placed in them. Coronary arteries weren't "meant" to have stents placed in them. Mr. Dec's position amounts to a life devoid of anything but existence at a bare subsistence level consistent with the ascetic religious life of monks. Furthermore, contracting a sexually transmitted disease is as immoral as the act of eating food from McDonald's and developing atherosclerosis. Specific acts may be immoral, but a blanket condemnation is not warranted.

Lastly, Sam from Butler states he would rather be treated by a witch doctor than by me. I guess because I am a physician who is uninhibited in his political opinion, that make me an incompetent doctor. I find it curious that he places me below a witchdoctor. Witchdoctors are characterized by a disdain of evidence-based medicine and a reliance on anecdotes and mysticism. At all times, I have appealed to evidence, reason, and logic to back up my statements. It is unfortunate that Sam engages in ad hominem attacks on my competence without any evidence, other than my interest in politics and debate.
