BUTLER TWP — The Nutrition Group, the new company taking over the food service in the Butler School District, will be at the district’s Back to School Nights to meet the public and answer questions.

Kelly Patterson, the regional manager of the Nutrition Group, on Monday told the school board about the changes coming to the schools regarding student food.

The company will have a representative at each Back to School Night to answer questions, she said.

The elementary night will be at 6 p.m. Aug. 29 at the schools. The middle school’s night will be at 5 p.m. Aug. 29 and Aug. 30.

The intermediate high school’s orientation will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

The high school’s orientation will be at 1 p.m. Aug. 25.

Patterson said for the elementary schools, the company has ordered equipment manufactured specifically for the smaller children.

Elementary students will have a fresh fruit and vegetable bar available at the end of September.

To eliminate the prepackaged meals sold at the elementary schools, the Nutrition Group will begin switching to full-service cafeterias in October, Patterson said.

“That will eliminate the cold pack of the meal,” she said. “We will start transitioning the elementary schools one school at a time. Some of the larger transitions will start happening in October.”

The order of the transition hasn’t been determined yet, but Patterson said the company plans to have all of the elementary schools changed by the end of the school year.

At the intermediate school, the fresh fruit and vegetable bar will be added, and the high school also will have that option.

Patterson said pizza will be an option offered at the high school only.

“Pizza is one of the things we do really well,” she said.
