31-year-old man found dead near creek bed

Daughter, 3, was nearby unhurt

Butler police are investigating what happened to a 31-year-old Summit Township man who was found dead Wednesday night at a creek bed with his young daughter nearby at the Butler Athletic Field off South Cliff Street. The 3-year-old girl was unharmed.

No foul play is suspected, Butler Detective Lt. Chad Rensel said Thursday. Police did not immediately release the man's name. An autopsy was planned Thursday.

A city couple was preparing to walk their dogs around 9 p.m. when they reported finding the man unresponsive, police said. The couple also advised that a young girl was with the man. They helped the child and called 911.

Officers arrived and determined the man was dead. There was no trauma nor any injuries on his body, Rensel said. Police found the man with a wallet, which was used to provide a preliminary identification.

Police eventually notified the girl's mother, and she arrived to take custody of the child. Authorities said the child's parents did not live together.

Investigators did not know how long the man had been dead before he was found. He had his cellphone with him. Rensel said police plan to obtain a search warrant for the phone to allow them to scour it for possible clues.

Police would not speculate about a possible cause of death, but they noted the man had a pre-existing medical condition. No illegal contraband was found on or near the body, police said.

The man's mother told police that her son recently had started a new job, Rensel said.
