Suzanne E. Steel

Suzanne Emilienne Godfrin Steele, 84, of West Cooper Street in Slippery Rock died at 5 a.m. Saturday at Ellwood City Hospital.

Born in Paris, France, May 11, 1923, she was the daughter of Lucien and Blanche Rose Godfrin.

She received her master's degree from the Sorbonne University in Paris and her teacher's certification from Slippery Rock State College in 1962.

Mrs. Steele taught French and German for years in the Butler School District and retired in 1985.

She was a member of the Gingerhill Unitarian Universalist Church of Slippery Rock. She was a life member of the Pi Delta Phi national honorary society and a member of the Grove City French Club.

She was part of the French Resistance during World War II when she met her husband, Leslie, a U.S. Army soldier. They were married in Reims, France, Oct. 27, 1945.

She enjoyed travel, dancing and spending time with her family and her many beloved pets.

Surviving are two sons, J. Daniel Steele and his wife, Gail, of Boardman, Ohio, and Michael L. Steele and his wife, Laura, of Troy, Bradford County; a daughter, Sharleen R. Johnston of Slippery Rock; a brother, Gilbert Godfrin of Ardenne, France; four grandchildren, James Steele and his wife, Lynne, Briere Steele, Clarissa Menotti and her husband, Francis, and Matthew Steele; and two great-grandchildren, Lauren and Alex, the children of Jim and Lynne Steele. Also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews in the Slippery Rock area and in France.

Her husband, Leslie L. Steele, died Aug. 22, 2001. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Jeanne.

<B>Steele</B> — Friends of Suzanne Emilienne Godfrin Steele, who died Saturday, July 14, 2007, will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the <B>Smith Funeral Home</B>, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock. Services will follow at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
