Kiester

David Eugene Kiester, 81, of Portland, Ore., died July 17.

Born Sept. 12, 1925, in Kiester, Slippery Rock Township, he was the son of Jesse and Frances Kiester. He grew up on the family farm and spent his free time hunting and fishing.

After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Army and served during World War II. By 19, he was senior control tower operator at King Charlie Tower, Mohenberi, India. He earned a Good Conduct Medal, the Meritorious Unit Award, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal with two bronze stars and the WWII Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant.

He then attended Brigham Young University, did postgraduate work at the Chicago College of Osteopathy, graduated as a doctor of osteopathy and practiced his profession for years.

After moving to Portland, he was a supervisor for the City Center Parking for years before he started his own recycling business, which he operated until his retirement in 2004.

Surviving are his former wife, Elaine of Alberta, Canada, and their four children, Kerry, David and Lori, all of Alberta, and Kevin of Portland; his wife, Bonnie VanLue Kiester and their children, James, Jeffrey and Ed, all of Portland; three sisters, Anita Cratty of Slippery Rock, Donna Gibson of Butler and Francie Bales of Salt Lake City, Utah; and a brother, Scott Kiester D.O., of Granger, Ind.

A brother and a sister preceded him in death.
