Cranberry's pool will open with restrictions
CRANBERRY TWP — The Cranberry Township Waterpark will open June 20.
But not to everyone.
Limiting attendees to residents and current members is one strategy the township is taking to encourage social distancing when the pool opens.
Pete Geis, Cranberry's director of parks and recreation, said that while the pool already has a number of things that make it safe, they'll be taking other steps to ensure safety as state-mandated closures of businesses and pools due to the COVID-19 pandemic wind down.
“We have probably one of the safest pools in the state,” Geis said, noting that the water park has three different filtration system and ultraviolet light. “No one in our region has anything like that. We're not completely foolproof, but we're one of the safest pools that you can go to.”
Some parts of the general pool facilities, such as the sand volleyball court and the sand play area, will be closed due to the difficulty of sanitizing those areas. In other spots, such as the kids' splash pad, steps have been taken to remove indirect surface contact by deactivating the hand actuator and leaving the water on while the pool is open.
In the grass, dots will be placed 10 feet apart to encourage social distancing — Geis said it should give guests “perspective” on how far apart they should be — though that kind of restriction will not necessarily be enforced at the pool.
“Our lifeguards are not going to be enforcing social distancing,” he said. “They're going to be keeping people alive.”
The concession stand also will have limited hours, from noon to 6 p.m., and the menu will similarly be limited, with food options like chicken tenders still offered, but not made-to-order wraps.
Geis said opening the pool during a pandemic should have a positive impact on the community.
“(Keeping staff alert of the situation) was big for the community,” Geis said. “All these kids, before going back to school, they get to get a little money in their pockets.”
