Harold R. "Jake" Mathews, 92, of Evans City died early Friday morning at the Butler Memorial Hospital following an illness.

Born March 5, 1916, he was the son of Isaiah and Lulu Bolten Mathews.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Stone Church. He enjoyed sheep farming and walking.

He was retired from Mine Safety where he worked with chemicals.

Surviving are one son, Donald Mathews of California; one son-in-law, Jay D. Fassinger; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Stella Kniess Mathews, who died Sept. 11, 1988; and one daughter, Shirley Fassinger.
