Garing

Dorothy Joan Garing, 96, formerly of Chicora, went to be with Jesus late Saturday evening, July 18, 2026, at Shenango on the Green, in New Wilmington.

Joan was born in Mercer on Sept. 10, 1929. She was the daughter of the late Amos and Sarah Armagost Campbell.

Joan was a 1947 graduate of Fairview Township-Karns City High School. While attending high school, Joan met the love of her life Edward E. “Ed” Snyder. The couple was married Aug. 10, 1949, at Karns City United Methodist Church. They enjoyed 23 years of marriage before Ed went to be with his Lord and Savior on Aug. 21, 1972. Joan married Lewis L. “Lew” Garing on June 21, 1981. The couple celebrated nearly 28 years of marriage. Lewis went to be with his Lord and Savior on April 16, 2009.

She was a longtime devout member of Karns City United Methodist Church. Joan continued her spiritual journey attending the First Baptist Church in New Castle.

Joan dedicated many years of service to the local community, particularly at Chicora Elementary School, where her children had attended. She was employed as a civil service retirement claims examiner at the underground mine in Boyers.

Joan was a talented and passionate painter. She enjoyed teaching painting classes at Chicora Senior Center and selling her paintings at numerous local craft shows. She loved being a member of a hobby club and a card club. Her love for travel took her on numerous trips including: the Holy Land, Alaska, Hawaii, Nashville and two mission trips to Haiti.

Joan is lovingly remembered by her family: her three children, Marlene Weimer and her husband, Gary, of New Castle; Ed Snyder and his wife, Sheryl, of Broomfield, Colo.; and Karen O’Leary, of Arvada, Colo. Her life was also enriched by her two stepsons, Brian Garing and his wife, Jackie, of Karns City, and Steve Garing and his wife, Chris, of Chicora.

She was very proud of her 12 grandchildren: Lindsay Adams and her husband, Bill; Darren Weimer and his wife, Jenna; James Snyder; Jake Snyder and his wife, Jamie; Emily Snyder; Erin and Sean O’Leary; Jesse Garing and his wife, Hanna; Adam Garing and his wife, Abbey; Caleb Garing and his wife, Laura; Matthew Garing; and Jennifer Moorman and her husband, Matt. Her nine great-grandchildren were the light of her life: Sofia and Will Adams, Hudson and Trace Weimer, Jack and Canan Garing, Adalyn Garing, and Mason and Madelyn Moorman.

In addition to her parents and husbands, Joan was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Rankin, Jane Rodgers and Roberta Vensel; and five brothers, Paul Campbell, Jupe Campbell, Frank Campbell, Fred Campbell and Wayne Campbell; as well as a number of brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Joan’s family is grateful to God for blessing her with a full life, to work at a job she loved, to travel, to serve in missions, and to enjoy her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Joan’s warmth, generosity and creativity will be deeply missed by all who knew her; but her family is at peace knowing she is in the arms of the Lord.

GARING — A celebration of life service for Dorothy Joan Garing, who died Saturday, July 18, 2026, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, at First Baptist Church, 984 W. Maitland Lane, New Castle, with the Rev. Mike Willmer, church pastor, officiating.

Interment will be beside her first husband in Bear Creek Cemetery, Petrolia.
