A member of Evans City Borough Council resigned without warning on July 1, more than two years before her term was set to end.

Shelley Natali, who had served on the council for about a year and a half, resigned last week. Evans City Mayor Dean Zinkhann said the resignation was due to personal reasons and conflicts of interest. He did not specify what these were.

“She said that she was interested in doing something else that would have direct conflict,” said Lee Dyer, Evans City Borough Council President.

Zinkhann said he was sad to see Natali go.

“I really liked Shelley, she was a great person,” he said. “It couldn't work out for her, what she wanted to do,” he said, but didn't elaborate on what that was.

During her tenure, Natali was a fierce critic of the Seven Fields/Evans City Regional Police Department.

In October 2018, she attended a police commission meeting with a four-page list of reasons why she felt the department was doing an insufficient job. Some of her concerns included training, how officers were being treated, community engagement and issues with short staffing.

Natali could not be reached Monday for comment.

On Monday, one week after Natali sent in her resignation, a post to the borough office's Facebook page read, “Due to the untimely resignation of an Evans City Borough Council member, we are accepting letters of interest from borough residents to fill the position.”

Dyer encouraged anyone who lives in the borough and feels they are qualified to submit a letter of interest.

He said those who serve on council work to represent all parts of Evans City, although different council members work on various committees.

Letters of interest are due to the borough office by 3 p.m. July 22. They can also be mailed to 204 B South Jackson St., Evans City.

Zinkhann said they are looking for “someone (who) really knows what's going on.”
