SRU's all-time leading scorer to be honored

SLIPPERY ROCK — Myron Brown is returning to The Rock.

The Slippery Rock University men's basketball all-time leading scorer will be recognized at Morrow Field House with his teammates and coach during SRU's game against Bloomsburg at 3 p.m. Nov. 21.

The event is being dubbed "Myron Brown Appreciation Night." He will be recognized on the court during a brief ceremony and a reception will be held in his honor after the game.

Pizza and soft drinks will be served at the reception. A $6 entry fee will be charged.

The 6-foot-3 Brown scored a school-record 2,619 points during his career at The Rock from 1987-91. His scoring average of 26.6 points per game and 826 points scored during his senior season are school records as well.

Brown was selected in the second round of the 1991 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves.

"Having a player from Slippery Rock drafted into the NBA — that will never happen again," said Bob Barlett, Brown's coach at SRU. "We played some Division I teams in those days and Myron gained notice by how well he played in those games."

Barlett will be returning to SRU as part of the Nov. 21 festivities for the first time since his coaching career ended there in 1994.

"Myron was part of a talented freshman class we had that played together and grew up as a team together," Barlett said. "C. Russell was one of the best point guards in the country. Kevin Jones was among the top five scorers and rebounders in the conference and Bill Johnson was a first team All-American.

"I never felt that team got the recognition from the school it deserved. Nobody from those teams is in the (SRU Athletic) Hall of Fame and that bothers me. I'm glad they're doing this for Myron and I'm excited about coming back," he added.

Barlett was 126-121 in nine years of coaching at The Rock. Brown's teams were 78-39 over four years, including records of 23-6 and 23-9 their junior and senior seasons, respectively.

The 23 wins remain a single-season school record. Since the 23-9 campaign of 1990-91, SRU basketball had one winning season in 17 years before last year's team finished 21-8 under first-year coach Kevin Reynolds.

"We're trying to get Slippery Rock basketball back to those glory years," Reynolds said. "Bringing Myron back is a big part of that."

Brown said Reynolds has SRU basketball "moving in the right direction."

"I'd like to see a few more freshmen in there for the long haul," Brown said. "But he's trying to get the alumni involved in the program and he's doing all the right things."

SRU finished 14-14 during Brown's freshman season. The Rock had lost 54 of 77 games over the three previous seasons.

"We were too young to realize we weren't supposed to win," Brown said, laughing. "We jelled as a group and the community got behind us. That place used to be packed on game nights."

Barlett said they used to roll out a set of bleachers behind each basket and rows of fans stood in the rafters overlooking the court as well.

"That facility could seat 3,400 and we got close to 4,500 in there," the coach recalled. "The support was phenomenal."

Brown played only four games — scoring nine points in 23 minutes of action — before being released by Minnesota in December 1991. Between the Continental Basketball Association and leagues in other countries, he played pro ball for 14 years.

"To this day, I don't know why the Timberwolves released me," Brown said. "They never gave me any kind of look or real chance to play."

Brown played for a Yugoslavian team that won the European League championship and was a member of the Brazil squad that won the South America Cup in 2005, his last year of pro ball.

"All those (SRU) teams that won three or four games a year and finished last all the time, it was tough seeing that. We never finished last. I don't know what last is like," Brown said.

Now running his own construction business in Kennedy Township, Brown is married with two children. His fourth-grade son plays basketball and "he's gonna be better than Dad was," Brown said.

"It's quite an honor what they're doing for myself and our team," he said of Nov. 21. "Getting together and seeing everyone again — It's going to be wild."

SRU will honor Troy Mild, the No. 2 scorer in the program's history, during its Feb. 13 game with Edinboro. Its No. 4 all-time scorer, Bill Rausch, will be honored at the Feb. 20 Clarion game.
