Hoyas topple St. John's

Chris Wright scored 21 points, Greg Monroe and Austin Freeman each had 15 points, and No. 13 Georgetown beat St. John's at Washington Thursday in the Big East opener for both teams.

Georgetown (10-1, 1-0 Big East) was playing just its third game since Dec. 12, and looked rusty at times. They built a 12-point first-half lead, but repeatedly allowed pesky St. John's (10-3, 0-1) back in the game.

The Red Storm took a 51-50 lead on Dwight Hardy's 3-pointer with 9:31 to play. But Georgetown went up 60-54 with 5:12 left and St. John's missed several opportunities to tie it down the stretch.

Hardy led St. John's with 14 points on 5-of-13 shooting.

At Durham, N.C., Nolan Smith scored 23 points to help Duke beat Pennsylvania 114-55.Kyle Singler added 20 points for the Blue Devils (11-1), who took control of the game early en route to their fifth straight victory. Duke led by double figures in the first 5 minutes, then ran off a 23-3 run that blew the game open and turned the rest of the contest into a formality.It was a record day for all the wrong reasons for Penn (0-9). Duke's 114 points were the most by an opponent, while the 59-point margin of defeat was also the worst in program history.Jack Eggleston scored 13 points to lead Penn.

At Memphis, Tenn., Wayne Chism had 15 points and nine rebounds for Tennessee.J.P. Prince added 12 points and Tyler Smith had 11 points for the Volunteers (10-2) as Tennessee outrebounded Memphis 47-28.Tennessee defense, meanwhile, held the Tigers to 31.4 percent shooting (16 of 51), although the Vols shot only 35.8 (19 of 53).Doneal Mack led Memphis (9-3) with 15 points before fouling out with 3:32 left.

At Madison, Wis., Trevon Hughes scored 16 points to help Wisconsin knock off Ohio State in both teams' Big Ten opener.Wisconsin (11-2) won easily despite a quiet first half from leading scorer Jon Leuer, who played only 4 minutes in the first half after picking up a pair of fouls and committing a turnover early on.Leuer was back on the floor after halftime, when he scored all 11 of his points.William Buford scored 14 points to lead Ohio State (10-3), but appeared to hurt his leg in the second half.

At Tallahassee, Fla., Deividas Dulkys matched his career high with 19 points, and Florida State routed Alabama A&M.
