SR schools keep security firm

HARRISVILLE — The Slippery Rock School District will continue to contract with Pond Security for now.

Last week, the Moniteau and Grove City school districts ended their use of Pond after discovering that two of its former guards have criminal records, one being a felon and the other a sex offender.

The Mars and South Butler school districts also use Pond, which is based in Allison Park.

Slippery Rock Superintendent Kathy Nogay said Monday night that the district is committed to making sure that everyone who works in the district who comes in contact with students has the proper clearances.

She said the district has a policy that employees’ clearances have to be renewed once a year. Additionally, if employees stop working for a time, they have to have their clearances renewed when they start again.

Nogay said that neither of the two guards from Pond worked in the district. She said that the school board might discuss the issue later.

“We will continue to monitor the situation with Pond Security,” Nogay said.

Slippery Rock has contracted with Pond for three years.

The district has one security guard at the high school for general security, monitoring parking, escorting students and other tasks. Pond guards also are used at basketball and football games.

Pond is an eight-year-old service that provides security personnel, electronic monitoring and security consulting services.

It employs about 150 people.
