PIAA finally makes good call

Some random thoughts to take you into a random weekend:

-- The PIAA is scrapping its plan to go from the current four classification format to six.

The vote was narrow — 15-13 — but there were simply too many obstacles to the move, namely the WPIAL was going to bail on the PIAA playoffs if such a change occurred.

Finally, some common sense coming from the PIAA.

-- To further reinforce the newly found common sense by the PIAA, the organization voted to move the softball pitching circle from 40 feet to 43 feet.

Not only does that bring the high school game inline with college, but it also will drastically cut down on the needless injuries suffered by pitchers who are unable to get out of the way of screaming line drives hit right back at them.

Just ask former Knoch High School pitcher Chelsea Martin what it feels like to lose the final month of her senior season to a line drive off the wrist of her pitching hand.

-- Brett Favre may make his decision on whether to play this season.

Or not.

-- Roy Halladay may get traded.

Or not.

-- The Major League Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony is Sunday.

For once, I am looking forward to hearing a speech.

Hall of Fame speeches are usually long and boring, filled with praise to family, friends, coaches, fans — the server at the Olive Garden — anyone who may have made any kind of minute impact on the inductee’s life.

But I am looking forward to hearing what will fall from the lips of Rickey Henderson, who still believes, he can still steal 20 bases in the majors at age 50.

I just hope he whips out the speech he made when he broke the all-time stolen base record.

“Today, I am the greatest of all time. Thank you.”

Awesome stuff.
