BC3 metrology will hold 25th reunion

BUTLER TWP—People involved with one of only a handful of metrology programs in the country will gather for a reunion Saturday.

The Butler County Community College program is celebrating its 25th anniversary amid the college's 40th anniversary celebration.

David Schiebel, associate professor of metrology and electronics, said the program is considered the only comprehensive program in the country.

Metrology includes dimensional measurements, measuring physical objects, electric measurements, such as voltage, and chemical and biological measurements.

Schiebel said the program began with a $48,000 grant from the Buhl Foundation in 1981 after a survey of employers found there was a need for those who knew how to create accurate measurements.

Students learn measurement techniques, common mistakes in measurements, and ways to prevent inaccuracies.

When the program was developed with the help of now-retired professor David Blewett, the National Bureau of Standards and the National Conference of Standards Laboratories endorsed the program. While it was originally intended to become a complementary program, it developed into a full metrology program with the first graduating class in 1983.

This year 11 students were scheduled to graduate from the program.

Students from the program can enter career fields in research and development, calibration, and quality management, Schiebel said.

"Every company has something that has something to do with quality control that makes sure the product meets the specifications of regulations," he said. "Demand for metrology remains fairly consistent."

The original grant documents and taped remarks by Blewett will be at the champagne and hors de'vours event from 4 to 10 p.m. at the Succop Conservancy.

Those who were involved in the program are asked to call Michelle Jamieson, director of alumni programs and annual campaigns, at 724-287-8711 ext. 8235 for information.
