Please exercise your right to vote

I have a problem with the American public. I have been a member of an election board for quite a few years. My mother was also an election board member for almost 40 years before me.

I recently was told or heard that around 90 million people in this country who are eligible to vote do not vote or are not even registered to vote. I believe this to be true because I know how many people live in my municipality, and a lot of them are not on the registry. And I know on my own street, about one quarter I know don’t vote. Many only vote every four years for the presidential elections, which is just as appalling, because it is not in any way the most important. I have heard many half-baked reasons (which I will not go into) for not voting — none of which make much sense.

I don’t know what we can do about it, because if it was something like attaching it to your driver’s license or making it mandatory to register, that would violate someone’s “personal rights” even though we have to have a license to drive, hunt, fish and other things, which are not nearly as important as our government.

Think about it. If all those people voted, what a difference it might possibly make, and maybe we wouldn’t be in the mess we are today.

Phyllis Metz,

Harmony
