Ann Shipton

Shipton

Ann Eleanor Shipton, beloved wife of Leroy I. Shipton, beloved mother and grandmother, longtime Slippery Rock resident, and member of Slippery Rock Alliance Church, passed peacefully Thursday, Jan. 8, 2026, of natural causes at St. John Specialty Care Center in Mars, where she had been a resident for the past six years.

Born Ann Eleanor Beaton on Feb. 19, 1931, in Lourdes, Stellarton, Nova Scotia, to parents Isabel Marie Beaton (MacLeod) and David Constance Beaton, she was the oldest of 13 children. As a child, Ann attended Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School.

In 1948 Ann secured a job as a telephone operator working the switchboard for Bell Canada in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. After several years, Ann got married on July 30, 1955, to Edward Thompson of New Glasgow, a former bank teller at the Bank of Nova Scotia and 1955 graduate of Acadia University in Wolfville.

Ann and Edward moved to London, Ontario, so Edward could attend graduate school at Western University. After graduating, Edward secured a job as a research chemist at Park-Davis Pharmaceuticals in Detroit, Mich., so Ann, Edward and their new son Michael all immigrated to the United States via Detroit in 1958. In 1969 their daughter Shelley was born.

Ann relocated from Detroit to live in Chester, N.J., and Cranbury, N.J., between 1976 and 1996. During her time in New Jersey, Ann was a member of Grace Bible Chapel in Chester. Ann went on three missionary trips to Romania in the early 1990s during the tumultuous transition years from Communist control to spread the word of the gospel to people that previously weren’t allowed to be Christians without being imprisoned. In 1996 Ann moved to Slippery Rock, where she joined Slippery Rock Alliance Church and met her future husband Leroy where they were both members. Ann and Leroy were married on April 15, 2000.

Ann is survived by her son, Michael; daughter, Shelley; stepsons, Dan and Brian; stepdaughter, Joni; and grandchildren, Ryan, Scott, Brian, Sara, Jesse, Jacob, Marla and Courtney. Ann is also survived by four of her 12 siblings in Canada, Ellen, Donna, Gordon, and Sandra.
