Robert ‘Bob’ Foyle
Robert “Bob” Carleton Foyle, 93, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2025.
Bob was born Oct. 19, 1932, in Chicago, the son of the late James and Margaret Foyle.
Bob graduated from Aspinwall High School and studied mechanical engineering at Pennsylvania State University. His studies were interrupted when he was called into service, where he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the tail end of the Korean conflict. Upon his discharge, he resumed his studies at Carnegie Mellon University.
On March 19, 1955, he married the love of his life, Margaretta “Peg” Weinfurther. Bob was a devoted husband and father and together they raised three children, Andrew, Lisa and Douglas.
Bob and Peg moved the family to Zelienople in 1964, as Bob began his long and successful engineering career at the Herman Corp designing and building casting machines for the foundry industry. Bob was instrumental in developing V-Process casting technology and, in 1990, moved to Lansing, Mich., to work for Roberts-Sinto. He retired in 1994 as president of Roberts Sinto and moved back to Zelienople.
Bob was active in the community, serving on Zelienople Borough Council, the water authority and with the Zelienople Rotary club.
In retirement, Bob utilized his engineering skills in woodworking, designing and building many heirloom items for his family and friends. He was particularly proud of the kaleidoscopes he made for his grandchildren. Sadly, macular degeneration robbed him of his eyesight and he had to give up woodworking. He always spoke longingly of making a couple more kaleidoscopes for his great-grandsons.
Bob and Peg enjoyed traveling. They traveled several times to Europe, Japan and many destinations throughout the U.S. Bob was always partial to Japan, having worked with Japanese colleagues before retirement. They particularly enjoyed being hosted by a close colleague on an extended guided trip throughout Japan.
One of Bob’s greatest passions, other than his family, was the Laetus Club Island in northern Ontario. Bob and Peg spent many summer vacations enjoying the peace and tranquility on the lake. A “perfect” day in camp started with a few hours of fishing, followed by puttering around with one of the endless maintenance projects around camp. Happy hour began at 4, consisting of a refreshing plunge into the lake and an equally refreshing adult beverage. The day ended listening to the loons while watching the most magnificent sunsets anywhere on earth. Great times!
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Louis and Dorothy Weinfurther; his daughter, Lisa; and sister, Patricia.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 70 years, Peg; his sons, Andrew (Deb), of Girard, Pa., and Douglas, of Zelienople; his son-in-law, John Friedrich; and his grandchildren, Dr. Sarah Foyle (Tim Gallagher), Kelley Oliver (Dylan), Lauren Friedrich and Leo Friedrich. He is further survived by great-grandchildren, Aiden and Conor Gallagher.
The family wishes to thank the many doctors, nurses and aides from Cranberry Place, Passavant Hospital and Mercy Hospital who treated and comforted Bob in his final days. Special thanks go to Dr. Ricardo Raymundo, of Steel City Internal Medicine, and Dr. Karl Anderson, of the cardiovascular ICU at Passavant.
