Convicted murderer to serve reentry supervision after prison sentence

A Butler Township man convicted of third-degree murder last month was ordered Monday to be serve 12 months of reentry supervision upon his release from the 17 to 34 years in prison he is serving.

The sentence Nathan Michael, 29, received for the June 24, 2024, shooting death of Joseph Derenzo, 38, was amended to include the reentry supervision, a form of probation designed to help individuals reintegrate into the community.

Judge Joseph Kubit, who presided over Michael’s jury trial and imposed the sentence, granted a post-sentence motion from the public defender’s office to amended the sentence to add reentry supervision.

Kubit said the supervision is required under Title 61, which addresses prisons and parole, when a person’s minimum aggregate sentence is 4 years or more. He said the amendment can be appealed.

Michael’s trial started Sept. 15 and testimony was completed the next day. The jury deliberated the next two days before rendering the verdict Sept. 19. He was sentenced Oct. 23.

Derenzo’s family hoped the jury would have convicted Michael of first-degree murder, which is punishable by life in prison without the possibility of parole or death.

Derenzo was not armed when Michael shot him six times in the garage of Michael’s townhome on Spooner Drive, but Michael claimed he fired in self-defense after Derenzo reached for his waistband and for Michael’s rifle that was in the garage.
