The Mars Sports Hall of Fame will induct its 2025 class during a banquet Saturday at Mars Middle School. The group includes nine athletes, one coach, two contributors and one team. They will be recognized at halftime of Friday’s home football game against West Mifflin.

The Hall of Fame was established in 1970 and welcomed 32 individuals over the next 17 years. Inductions were revived in 2007, and this year’s class will push the enrollment to 170 individuals and seven teams.

The Class of 2025 includes:

Ira Baumgartel, contributor

Played basketball and ran cross country at Mars before graduating in 1969. After graduating from University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1977, he served as Mars Area School District physician from 1983-2013 and spent many Friday nights on the Planets’ sideline during football games. All the while, he remained a staunch supporter of all athletic teams at Mars.

Joe Cioc, coach, cross country/track

From 1990-2023, he was head coach for over 50 combined seasons with the boys track and field and boys and girls cross country programs. Nine of his track teams and two of his cross country squads had undefeated regular seasons. His 2007 track team won the WPIAL Class 2A team title, and the Planets won over 40 district championships between individuals and relays on his watch.

Cioc credits assistant coaches Rick Matlick, Dean Markovics, Tom Dorsch, Kent Shoemaker and Ed Shephard for contributing to the success.

Chris Georgiadis, Class of 2014, swimming

Was the Planets’ top swimmer in 2014 when the team won the WPIAL and PIAA Class 2A titles with just six swimmers. That year, Georgiadis won individual district titles in the 200 individual medley and breaststroke. Two weeks later, he won a state championship in the IM. Also won a WPIAL title in the IM as a junior.

Sara Getsy, Class of 2015, basketball

Played guard and scored 1,031 points in her varsity career. Was named all-section and a Butler Eagle all-star. Was awarded the U.S. Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award as a senior at Mars.

She helped the Planets to four straight WPIAL playoff appearances.

Ali Goetz, Class of 2015, basketball

Played forward and scored 1,298 points in her varsity career. Was named all-section and was a Butler Eagle all-star. Received the Maude Neithercoat Award in 2015 after being voted Mars’ top senior female athlete that school year.

During her four years on the team, Mars tallied 59 wins and won three section titles.

Dave Kuremsky, contributor

Has coached football, basketball, baseball, track and field and cross country at various levels in the district for a total of nearly 80 seasons. Served as statistician for the varsity football team from 1992-2021. Is currently in his fourth year as the public address announcer for Mars varsity football and boys and girls basketball.

Alex Perri, Class of 2011, soccer

A midfielder, he helped the Planets win two WPIAL titles (2008, 2009) and reach the state final in 2007. Was named All-Section, All-WPIAL and to the Butler Eagle all-star team during his career. Was named team MVP as a senior and selected to play in the Western Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association all-star game that year.

In track, he won WPIAL Class 3A titles in the 110 and 300 hurdles as a senior, also claiming state gold in the 110s that year. Still holds Butler County’s all-time best effort in the 300 hurdles at 37.89 seconds.
