SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock won the challenge, then met the challenge.

After winning a pair of coaching challenges on Shepherd fourth-and-1 plays in the final 5:24 — gaining possession both times — The Rock responded with a pair of touchdowns to tie the game with 36 seconds left. No. 4 SRU football then scored a 35-28 overtime victory over the Rams Saturday night at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

SRU (2-0) trailed 28-14 with 5:35 to play, Shepherd facing a fourth-and-1 at The Rock’s 30-yard line.

“I know we’ve been in some wild games, but this win may be my most memorable as a coach,” SRU coach Shawn Lutz said.

Rock starting quarterback Anthony Vespo threw three interceptions and lost a fumble. Lutz replaced the senior with redshirt freshman DaOne Owens with 12:05 left and his team trailing 28-14.

On fourth down from the SRU 30, Shepherd running back Jordan Barnett plunged ahead, the officials ruling he was stopped inches short. Rams coach Ernie McCook challenged the call, but it was not overturned.

Owens led SRU on a seven-play, 71-yard drive, JayJay Jordan scoring on an 8-yard run wiuth 3:08 remaining to pull The Rock within 28-21.

“We didn’t change up what we were calling or force anything deep,” Owens said. “We just played with a sense of urgency. It was the two-minute, quick offense from that point on.”

Shepherd (0-2) faced another fourth-and-1 on its next possession, this time from its own 45. Again, Barnett plowed into the line. A measurement was taken, and the officials ruled it a first down.

Lutz immediately challenged the call. After a 15-minute review, officials respotted the ball a half yard back and another measurement was taken. This time, the play wound up short of the sticks.

“That review felt like it took 30 minutes,” McCook said. “Our challenge was ruled inconclusive, theirs was conclusive. I chose not to punt there. I guess this loss is on me.

“The official who moved the ball back was not the official who reviewed the play in the tent. I didn’t quite understand that part.”

Had SRU lost that challenge — which occurred with 1:55 on the clock — the Rams could have run out the remaining time.

“I was certain we stopped him. I had full confidence we were getting the ball,” Lutz said.

Barnett, who rushed for three touchdowns on the night, didn’t agree.

“I thought I got there ... I know I got there,” he said.

Linebacker Teddy Gregory led The Rock with 14 tackles and lauded his teammates’ defensive efforts late in the game.

“Fourth-and-1, they have everything available in the playbook,” Gregory said of Shepherd. “We just had to man our positions on defense. We needed to make a play and we did.”

Owens capped a six-play, 45-yard drive to tie the game with 36 seconds left, scoring on a 16-yard run around right end.

Lutz opted to go for the game-tying PAT kick.

“Normally, I’d think of going for two right there, but we had the momentum at that point,” he said. “I was fine with overtime.”

Shepherd won the toss for OT and went on defense. Jordan scored on a 19-yard run on the second play of SRU’s possession. Barnett gained 4 yards on Shepherd’s first play from the SRU 25 in the extra session, but three incomplete passes followed and The Rock had the victory.

Shepherd missed a 44-yard field goal on its first possession of the night, and numerous holding calls cost the Rams first downs deep in SRU territory during the course of the evening.

“Five holding calls went against us when we would have the ball down around the 2(-yard line),” McCook said. “I laud Slippery Rock on playing a flawless game out there. They didn’t hold at all.”

While SRU had four turnovers on the night, the Rams had none.

“A differential like that, you have a 99% chance of losing the football game,” Lutz said.

The Rock stay home Saturday, hosting Shippensburg at 6 p.m.

“Owens will be our quarterback moving forward,” Lutz said. “I love Anthony, and DaOne and him are good friends. You have to make tough decisions sometimes.”

Saturday night’s win occurred on Owens’ birthday.

“That was fun,” Owens said. “I just stayed ready in case they needed me. Then, just get out there and play football.”
