Hundreds of supporters of all ages lined up to race and raise money for Butler’s Catholic community at the All Saints Parish Twilight 5k and 1-mile Fun Run on Friday, July 25, 2025.

Proceeds benefited All Saints Parish and the Sarah Kasunic/Emily Leyland Memorial Scholarship for students of Butler Catholic School.

“I am very, very grateful for (the scholarship’s) support,” said Tommy Edwards, a ninth grade student who received $1,000 from the scholarship in 2024.

He said that, while grateful for the financial help, the story behind the scholarship is what really shaped him as a person.

The fund is named for two Butler Catholic School graduates who passed away. Kasunic, 23, was hit by a vehicle on the side of the road in 2019; while Leyland, 31, died after battling Leukemia in 2013.

Their families decided to give back to the community by honoring their daughters, according to church business director Kelly Livermore. Local pastor Kevin Fazio helped turn their mission into a fundraiser in 2022.

The fourth annual twilight 5K and 1-mile fun-run kicked off this year at St. Conrad church at 7 p.m., just before sunset.

The event began with a prayer from Fazio, where he wished good health on all participants, who did the sign of the cross in unison when he said “Amen.”

Edwards, along with two other recipients, gave a few words describing how the scholarship has benefited them, followed by a performance of the national anthem.

Livermore said over 340 people preregistered this year, with more gathering for the actual event.

Douglas Tapager II, a student at BC3, had never run a 5K before.

“There’s good music, lots of people. It’s a nice event,” he said. “I think it’s awesome what they’re doing.”

He mentioned that he was excited to eat the post-race snacks, which included hot dogs, watermelon and pickles.

All Saints Parish plans to continue the scholarship and fundraiser for years to come. To qualify for the Kasunic/Leyland Scholarship, students must be in seventh or eighth grade and dedicated in their Catholic faith.

They also must write an essay, turn in a reference letter and complete an interview with the scholarship committee.

Information on next year’s race is available at AllSaintsButler.org/5K.
