Edna T. Walter
Edna T. “Tommie” Walter, 95, of Sherwood Oaks Retirement Community in Cranberry Township, formerly of Windihill, Greensburg, passed away Aug. 25.
She was born April 18, 1917, in Pittsburgh, the daughter of the late John E. Tomlinson and Anna C. Tomlinson.
Her beloved husband, John K. “Jack” Walter, who she married on Feb. 14, 1942, preceded her in death on Dec. 20, 1979. She also was preceded in death by her brother, Jack Tomlinson of Laurel, Miss.
Remaining family include two loving daughters, Ann Walter Martin (Don) of Butler and Betty Walter Miller (Ken) of Glenshaw; four grandchildren, Lynn (Paul), Beth, Jennifer and Doug; one great-grandchild, Weston; and several nieces and nephews.
During her early career, Mrs. Walter was employed as an executive secretary with West Penn Power Company in Pittsburgh. During the war years, she was transferred with her husband and studied at Carnegie Tech, New York University and Boston University. She also worked as an executive secretary for the Greensburg Garden and Civic Center Commission between 1970 and 1977. She was an associate life member of Greensburg’s Garden Center.
Her love of learning and travel led her to attend over 50 Elderhostel programs, which included visiting places such as Scandinavia, Thailand, China and Australia. She was a member of the American Contract Bridge League and became a Golden Age Master at age 80.
As a lover of music, she enjoyed playing her organ and at age 88, purchased her first keyboard. Her constant companion was “Newton,” a miniature schnauzer.
When she was a Greensburg resident, she was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church. While at Sherwood Oaks, she became a member of the Glenshaw Presbyterian Church in Glenshaw.
WALTER — Friends of Edna T. “Tommie” Walter, who died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012, are invited to a memorial service at 11 a.m. Sept. 29 at Glenshaw Presbyterian Church, 300 Glenn Ave., Glenshaw.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Glenn-Kildoo Funeral Home, 130 Wisconsin Avenue, Cranberry Township.
