Federal cuts reckless, misguided

On May 5, U.S. Rep Mike Kelly wrote about our nation's need to reduce deficit spending and his support for steps taken by the Trump administration.

I believe this to be the goal of most voters. In fact, every president in my recent memory has stated this goal.

The only president who made significant headway was Bill Clinton, a Democrat no less. Ronald Reagan convinced us that “Trickle Down Economics” would accomplish this and failed as the wealthy got tax breaks while the deficit soared.

The problem is to reduce spending with a minimum of negative outcomes for our citizenry. It is a noble goal but cannot be accomplished in 100 days.

Every government agency could benefit by a comprehensive audit. Not the rash across-the-board cuts we are seeing. Mike Kelly endorses these actions taken by inexperienced political and nonpolitical persons.

Mr. Kelly states $155 billion in savings have been uncovered. These are not savings already realized as he would like you to believe.

These cuts were made with no plan to find specific waste. No study as to what unintended consequences may come from them.

It is Mike Kelly's constituents who will likely be the most negatively impacted by these cuts.

Mr. Kelly is an educated man and knows Trumps actions, while being goal worthy, are fool hardy and harmful to our country. He fails to stand up against Trump's policies and with other Republicans who do their job with their constituents in mind.
