Butler County sees some outages Saturday

Despite a lack of severe weather, some residents around Butler County saw power outages Saturday, May 17, most likely due to wind.

According to the West Penn Power outages map, Butler County had 1130 customers without power as of 4 p.m. By 5 p.m. that number was down to 924 outages, a little over 1% of customers in Butler County. Meanwhile, the Central Electric Cooperative reported 226 outages as of Saturday evening.

“We had some wind with the rain we got last night, and it’s certainly been windy today,” meteorologist Liana Lupo with the National Weather Service’s Pittsburgh station said.

According to the National Weather Service, Butler Regional Airport saw wind gusts around 40 miles per hour and sustained winds around 30 miles per hour around 2 p.m. Saturday. The area had sustained winds around 25 to 30 miles per hour consistently throughout the day.

“It doesn’t always take as much in this region for trees to fall down due to wind, that can cause unexpected outages sometimes,” Lupo added.
