A Connoquenessing man is charged with leaving the scene of a crash that caused a gas leak on Whitestown Road.

Joshua Jennings Space, 33, was charged Tuesday, July 21, with felony criminal mischief and misdemeanor operating a vehicle without an ignition interlock, a device that prevents someone from operating a vehicle if it detects alcohol on their breath, following the Friday crash.

Police said they were dispatched to the 500 block of Whitestown Road for reports of a hit-and-run crash. Police arrived and found a Peoples Gas meter had been struck and was about 50 feet from its correct location.

Police also found damage to two nearby mailboxes and landscaping in a yard.

Three property owners gave police estimates of the damage, which totaled around $41,300. The number did not include an estimate from Peoples Gas to replace the meter.

Police were able to track the vehicle to Space’s home and found it parked in a way that was blocking Washington Street in Connoquenessing. Space admitted to the crash but said he did not notice damage to the landscaping, according to police.

Police later examined Space’s driving record and found his vehicle was supposed to be equipped with an ignition interlock device.

Space’s preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.
