2 hospitalized after truck goes over hill in Center Township

An 18-year-old and 14-year-old were taken by Stat MedEvac helicopter to a local hospital after their pickup truck went over a hillside near the intersection of West Sunbury and Aggas roads in Center Township on Sunday morning, May 11.

The incident was reported around 7 a.m. through an automatic iPhone crash notification.

According to a news release from Pennsylvania State Police, the crash occurred when the lone vehicle involved — a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado — failed to negotiate a turn and left the road while traveling north on West Sunbury Road. The vehicle broke through a guide rail and entered a wooded area, striking some trees before rolling over and coming to rest.

Two occupants are listed on the police report — 18-year-old Evan J. Kapsin, of Butler, and an unidentified 14-year-old female from Butler. Both were found in “critical condition” when emergency crews arrived on scene.

According to police, neither occupant was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

“The car was down over the hill about 150 feet off the road. One was probably ejected (from the car),” said Mike Pflugh, chief of the Unionville Volunteer Fire Company. “The other one, I’m not sure how she got out.”

According to police, the occupants were flown by STAT MedEvac to different Pittsburgh-area hospitals, Kapsin to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital and the juvenile to UPMC Children’s Hospital.

A section of West Sunbury Road was closed around 10:30 a.m. to allow emergency crews to remove the vehicle from the side of the road.

In addition to Unionville and the state police, the West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department and Butler Ambulance Service also responded to the scene.
