OFFENSIVE OFFENSEThe Yankees are one loss from another early exit from the playoffs. Alex Rodriguez was 0-for-3 in New York's 6-0 loss to the Detroit Tigers in Game 3 on Friday night. He's 1-for-11 in the first three games of the best-of-five series, hasn't driven in a run in 11 playoff games dating to 2004 and is batting .116 (5-for-43) in his last 12 postseason games. The Yankees were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position after going 1-for-8 in Game 2.
SIDELINEDDodgers first baseman Nomar Garciaparra has a tear in his left quadriceps, and won't be in the lineup Saturday night in Game 3 of the NL division series against the New York Mets — a game Los Angeles must win to avoid elimination. Grady Little told reporters before a workout at Dodger Stadium on Friday that an MRI earlier in the day revealed the tear, and it's doubtful Garciaparra will be able to start another game in the postseason, no matter how far the Dodgers go.
FAREWELLBuck O'Neil, the goodwill ambassador for the Negro Leagues who fell one vote shy of the Hall of Fame, died Friday night. He was 94. O'Neil had appeared strong until early August, when he was hospitalized for what was described as "fatigue." He was released a few days later, but readmitted on Sept. 17. Friends said that he had lost his voice along with his strength. No cause of death was immediately given. O'Neil was the first black coach in the majors.
