Raiders need better effort

JACKSON TWP — It wasn't Seneca Valley's loss to Norwin last week that bothered Raiders coach Ron Butschle as much as the way his team lost.

Following a 27-7 defeat to the Knights to open the 2007 season, Butschle said the game, "took me back three years," referring to his first year as the squad's coach in 2004, when the Raiders went 1-9.

"We watched the tape from the (Norwin) game and pointed out all the efforts that weren't good enough to win, plays where maybe a kid wasn't hustling as hard as he could," said Butschle. "It took us about 2½ hours to watch the whole tape and it wasn't very fun."

Butschle will be looking for improved effort Friday when SV heads south for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff against Penn-Trafford (0-1).

The Raiders are expected to have linebacker Derek Peluso and tailback James Daniels back on the field after they missed last week's game with a virus and ankle injury, respectively.

Daniels is coming off a junior campaign that saw him rush for 703 yards and score 11 touchdowns.

Senior Bill Burns, who is a familiar face in a number of SV's offensive sets, filled in for Daniels as the team's feature back last week and ended with a respectable 48 yards on 12 carries.

"With Daniels out, it creates a depth problem," said Butschle. "We have no problem with Burns running the ball, but he also plays inside and outside linebacker for us."

Daniels plays exclusively as a tailback and his return means a fresher Burns on defense.

Junior quarterback C.J. Brown threw for 119 yards last week, connecting with junior wideout Matt Plautz four times for 48 yards and SV's lone score on a 9-yard touchdown pass.

"Plays from those two players should be the norm, not the exception," Butschle said. "And they both understand that."

Both the running game and passing game will improve, provided the offensive line picks up its play.

Brown was sacked four times last week and hurried on countless other plays.

"Penn-Trafford will blitz us," Butschle said of the Warriors' 3-3 defensive scheme. "And we are working on protection this week."

Penn-Trafford also lost its season opener Saturday to Upper St. Clair, 17-7.

The Warriors, the second straight team SV will have faced from the Foothills Conference, had a costly fumble and interception, both in Upper St. Clair territory.

"We had some opportunities against Upper St. Clair, a real good football team," said Penn-Trafford coach Art Tragesser. "But we just weren't able to make the plays."

For the second straight game, Tragesser is looking to play two quarterbacks — senior Pat McEwen and sophomore Matt Hyland.

"We'll go with one quarterback in the first half and the other in the second half," said Tragesser, who did not say which one will start the game.

In last week's game, Hyland started and completed five of seven passes for 42 yards before McEwen entered the game in the second half and connected on four of nine passes for 29 yards and an interception.

Both have the luxury of throwing to one of the WPIAL's top returning receivers in Justin Edwards, who caught 31 passes last year for 575 yards and nine scores.

Seneca Valley and Penn-Trafford met last season at NexTier Stadium, with the Warriors pulling out a 27-18 win.
