CENTER TWP — State police are investigating an attack by two Rottweilers that left a 6-year-old New Castle girl with serious injuries Tuesday night at a relative's home in the township

The girl suffered bleeding bite wounds on her head and body in the incident, authorities said. She was flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital. Her condition was not known at press time.

The initial call came in about 8:35 p.m. reporting a dog attack at the house on Shanahan Road just off Sunset Drive in Center Township.

The girl was visiting a relative, who lives there, police said. The dogs were in another room and somehow got out before they attacked the girl.

A Butler Ambulance Service crew tended to the child while Unionville volunteer firefighters went to the nearby Crossfire Church at Route 8 and Mercer Road where they set up a landing zone for a STAT MedEvac.

The girl was taken to UPMC Children's Hospital for treatment of injuries described as “serious,” according to a report.

Neither state dog Warden Jennifer George nor township dog officer Eugene Henry showed up that night.

Telephone calls to George and Henry were not returned Wednesday.

Police said the owner was instructed to quarantine the dogs for 10 days to determine if they have rabies, in accordance with the state Dog Law.

It has not been determined, according to police, if charges would be filed in the incident.
