BUTLER TWP — Butler Township has received a second state grant to upgrade traffic signals on Whitestown Road, commissioners said Wednesday night.

The $43,880 grant will be used to upgrade traffic signals at three intersections along Whitestown — its crossings with South Duffy Road, Meridian Road and Eberhardt Drive.

The upgrades will include new control boxes, reflective signs for traffic lights and electronic upgrades that will make it easier for emergency vehicles to safely pass through the intersections when responding to calls.

Township manager Ed Kirkwood said the project will be managed by PennDOT, and design work will begin in October with the upgrades expected to be finished by June.

The township is required to match the grant, Kirkwood said.

The upgrades will come alongside a much larger traffic-signal-upgrade project, which township officials announced in March. That project, which will upgrade signals and other equipment along Route 68 in the township and in Butler, will be funded by a $1 million grant through the Southwest Pennsylvania Commission.
