Board approves repair of Dassa McKinney boiler

Moniteau

CHERRY TWP — A faulty water boiler at Dassa McKinney Elementary School may be repaired this week, according to Jeff Campbell, director of buildings and grounds for Moniteau School District.

Board directors at a Monday meeting approved $14,550 for Combustion Service & Equipment to repair the boiler. The cost for replacing the boiler would have been $264,550, Campbell said.

An operations committee meeting was held last week to discuss the issue, he said.

“(The boiler) is 20 years old,” Campbell said after the meeting. “We’re hoping that with the repairs, it will withstand another 20 years.”

Campbell said one of the tubes cracked in November. He said he hopes the company will repair the boiler Friday.

Board directors also proposed the continuation of the district’s weekend backpack program through an agreement with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, which supplies children with food on weekends.

About 65 children in the district participate in the program, board president Michael Panza said after the meeting.

Resignation

The board accepted the resignation of Paula Bredl, the district’s director of special education, “with regrets.”

Following the meeting, board president Michael Panza said Bredl was retiring.

Panza said the district will begin advertising for the position, and “hopefully, we’ll have some candidates within the next 60 to 90 days.”
