App lists school information

Seneca Valley School District on Monday unveiled its mobile application Monday.

JACKSON TWP — The Seneca Valley School District on Monday unveiled its mobile application that will provide users with information ranging from school delays and closings to menu items and athletic events.

The app, which can be downloaded with an Apple or Android device, contains 15 tabs for users to check.

It also will provide push notifications for users that will pop up when there are school delays or other time-sensitive information that needs to be disseminated to parents and students quickly.

Linda Andreassi, director of communications, said creating a mobile app made sense given the influx of social media and its effect on the way people communicate.

“It was a natural next step for the school district to provide as much information as possible in this format,” she said.

School officials have been working on the app for several months and debuted it Monday. It is ready to be used by parents, students and faculty.

The district will continue using Facebook, Twitter and other forms of social media to get out information, but will only use the new app for weather delays and cancellations.

The app will allow users to filter what they see based on which school they pick from a menu. It also will allow users to connect with Seneca Valley’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Sean VanScoyoc, the director of information technology for Seneca Valley, said it became apparent the district needed a mobile app after viewing numbers on the district’s website.

“We looked at the traffic on our website and saw that over half of that traffic was coming from mobile devices,” he said.

The most interesting part of the app, VanScoyoc said, is that parents can log into a portal with a username and password. Once inside, the parent can view report cards, review emergency contacts and check on students’ assignments.

He spent more than two months programming that part of the app alone, VanScoyoc said, but it’s worth it to finally see the finished product.

This is the first version of Seneca Valley’s app, but it won’t be the last, he said.

“Just like anything, it will get better over time,” he said. “I’m already looking forward to version two.”
