GROVE CITY — Grove City College officials said Thursday that the college has spent more than $7 million in improvements at the 188-acre campus this summer.

Perhaps the most visible, officials said, is the new turf on the college’s Robert E. Thorn Field. But that is just one of more than two dozen projects the college took on while students were away.

Work on replacing the football field’s turf began in June, the college said.

The area around the Breen Student Union has also been a job site for most of the summer, as new sewer lines were installed and crews added new steps and a porch to the west side of the building.

Contractors replaced the kitchen at Hicks Dining Hall and installed a new fire alarm system in the building. The college also added a new boiler system to provide heating redundancy during summer months.

One of the college’s more unique facilities — the William H. Allen Jr. Bowling Alley — also is on the project list. The alley’s lanes are getting repaired and new carpet is being added to the seating area.

Other projects included electrical work along the campus’ eastern border, renovations to the Henry Buhl Library, Crawford Hall and Rockwell Hall, mechanical improvements to swimming pools in the Physical Learning Center, and landscaping work from Rainbow Bridge to the upper campus.
