Police: Stranger found in Butler apartment charged with trespassing

A man was charged with criminal trespassing after entering the home of someone he didn’t know and sitting on their couch, according to charging documents.

Jeremy Schmidt, 46, was found by a resident of a West Jefferson Street apartment on Oct. 8, police said.

According to police, the resident reported a burglary in progress after he woke up and saw man on his couch whom he did not know. The man was later identified as Schmidt.

The resident told police he had not locked the door upon returning home.

Police said Schmidt was found lying on the couch, and Schmidt informed them he “had to come here.”

When officers advised Schmidt that he did not live in the apartment, he stated, “not yet.”

Other residents reported they had not seen Schmidt before, police said.

His preliminary hearing before District Judge William Fullerton is scheduled Oct. 16.
