All escape injury after crash in Franklin Township

Two drivers and a passenger avoided injury in a high-speed crash Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 30, on North Road in Franklin Township, state police said.

James D. Gillen, 18, of Harrisville, was cited for careless driving, driving on roadways laned for traffic and driving at an unsafe speed, in the crash, which left two vehicles disabled, according to Pennsylvania State Police in Butler.

Police said Gillen lost control of his 2016 Honda Civic and crashed into a 2019 Chevrolet Astro van driven by Carl Weichey, 64, of New Castle. The crash was reported around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Gillen’s vehicle was traveling north on North Road when his vehicle crossed into the opposite lane, striking Weichey’s vehicle, police said.

Police estimated Gillen’s vehicle was traveling 80 mph. A witness told police that the Civic had “become airborne.”

Both vehicles had “disabling damage,” according to police.

The drivers and an 18-year-old passenger did not report injuries, police said.
