Miller Minutes

Miller Minutes with Butler Eagle reporter, Molly Miller

As an adult, there’s no one I look up to more than Mr. Rogers. I think others who grew up in western Pennsylvania would say the same.

I think the most important thing Mr. Rogers taught was to be a neighbor to everyone you meet. Though we all differ, kindness toward others goes a long way.

It’s easy to neglect our neighbors, immediate or otherwise. Though we see them every day, and maybe wave, when is the last time you had a conversation with someone as you passed them on the sidewalk?

As I’m always advocating for community involvement, I think a great way to be neighborly is to invite someone to a community event. Do you have an elderly neighbor with a classic car he shines twice a week? Invite him to Cruise-A-Palooza. Do you know a woman who knits on her front porch every night? Meet her in Harmony for an Artisan Saturday.

Sure, they may turn you down, but you were neighborly, and that’s already making a difference in the world in a way Mr. Rogers could be proud of.

Below are a few events you can consider inviting your neighbors to:

Learn about the importance of mud at Moraine State Park’s Mud Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, June 23. Various children’s activities like a mud structure station, tracking station, and otter slip-and-slide will be held at the Lakeview Beach area, 225 Pleasant Valley Road, Portersville.
