Police probe man's death

Mark Noah
Alleged drug dealer faces felony charges

EVANS CITY — Police are investigating if a purported drug dealer provided heroin to a borough man who later died of a possible overdose Tuesday night.

Mark E. Noah, 47, of Callery is in the Butler County Prison on $250,000 bail. He faces several felony drug charges.

Evans City/Seven Fields police arrested Noah after Kenneth Stefanowicz’s death.

The 50-year-old Stefanowicz died just hours after he allegedly went to Noah’s home to buy drugs, according to court documents.

An autopsy Wednesday did not immediately determine a cause or manner of death, which is pending toxicology reports, said police Chief Joe McCombs.

“The case is under investigation,” McCombs said.

He added police on Wednesday planned to discuss their findings with a prosecutor for the county district attorney.

McCombs declined further comment.

Stefanowicz died after he was found unresponsive in the basement of the Van Buren Street home where he lived with his mother, authorities said.

Annette Stefanowicz notified police shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday after she discovered her son unconscious and not breathing, according to court documents.

He was taken to UPMC Passavant Cranberry and pronounced dead at 8:42 p.m. in the hospital’s emergency room, said county Chief Deputy Coroner John Hanovick.

Police said they found five empty stamp bags of suspected heroin as well as a used hypodermic needle and other drug contraband in Stefanowicz’s bedroom.

Two of the bags were stamped with the name “American Dreamer” along with an image of the Statue of Liberty. Three bags had no name on them.

Investigators spoke to family members who told police Stefanowicz recently had struggled with an addiction to prescription painkillers.

Police said Annette Stefanowicz acknowledged at 4 p.m. Tuesday she had driven her son to Noah’s home so he could buy $40 worth of pain medication.

It was known by Stefanowicz’s family he regularly bought painkillers from Noah, documents said.

Police also knew the county’s drug task force in December had arrested Noah for allegedly selling powerful narcotic painkillers. At that time, drug officers also found dozens of stamp bags of heroin at his home, court records showed.

During their investigation, Evans City/Seven Fields police reviewed text messages Stefanowicz received this week that confirmed he was headed to Noah’s home, documents said.

Later, investigators got a search warrant for Noah’s Cape Cod-style house.

Noah was home during the search that turned up prescription pill bottles and 31 bags of suspected heroin stamped with the name “American Dreamer” and with the Statue of Liberty on them, documents said.

Additionally, police seized suspected drug contraband, including a scale, and several cell phones.

In addition to felony and misdemeanor drug possession, Noah is charged with criminal use of a communications facility, a felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor.

McCombs acknowledged more charges could be filed, pending completion of the investigation. He would not elaborate.

But under state law, someone who provides a controlled substance can be charged with third-degree murder if a person dies from using that substance.

That specific charge, drug delivery resulting in death, carries a maximum penalty of 40 years in prison.
