BC3 will re-enact 'War of Worlds'

BUTLER TWP — Butler County Community College's Pioneer Players will perform a readers' theater adaptation of the famous 1938 broadcast of "War of the Worlds" at 8:15 p.m. Monday at the Succop Theater.

The dramatization of the science fiction novel by H.G. Wells aired on CBS Radio's Mercury Theater on Oct. 30, 1938, and sent listeners into mass hysteria.

That broadcast of "War of the Worlds," produced and performed by Orson Wells, was misinterpreted by listeners as a factual broadcast that aliens were invading New York and New Jersey. The program led residents to panic and to flee their households causing traffic jams and a flood of phone calls to authorities.

The Pioneer Players, made up of BC3 students involved in the theater and performing arts, will re-enact the fictional broadcast in celebration of Halloween.

The performance is directed by professor and Pioneer Players adviser Maggie Stock. Student technical directors are Robert Milligan and Travis Scholl.

The performance will begin immediately following the Monster Madness and Mayhem Halloween Celebration on the BC3 Main Campus. Tickets are $3 and will be available at the door.

For information, call Stock at 724-287-8711, Ext. 8272.
