Woman pleads to cell phone theft
A Portersville woman charged with robbery pleaded guilty to a lesser charge in Butler County court on Tuesday.
Chivonne L. Sherman, 33, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor theft before Judge Timothy McCune.
She was sentenced to six months of probation, 40 hours of community service and ordered to pay court costs and a $50 fine.
Sherman was initially charged with felony robbery after an incident on May 8 in Butler. That charge was later amended to the theft count per the plea agreement.
Butler police filed the robbery charge after it was reported that Sherman snatched a cell phone from the hands of another person on South Main Street, and then took off running.
Police said Sherman and the victim were standing by the post office about 11:40 p.m. when she asked to borrow his cell phone to make a call for a ride home. The man obliged and the suspect eventually returned the phone.
Moments later, however, she bumped into him, according to court documents, and snatched the phone out of his hand, before running across South Main Street while the victim yelled for her to bring back his phone.
