BONNEVILLE, UTAH — Rob Freyvogel found himself back on track after some technical difficulties at Speed Week.

Freyvogel of Butler Township qualified Tuesday for the Double AA/Blown Gas Streamliner Record at Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

He raced his custom-made Carbiliner at a speed of 363 mph. Today, he’ll race again, and his speeds will be averaged for his total.

“The car is handling great, driving absolutely fantastic,” he said. “All the stuff that we can’t fix easily is really doing well.”

The record is 348 mph, so the lowest Freyvogel can clock is 334 mph.

He previously ran a record-setting qualifying run Monday morning, but he failed to set an official record after an electrical problem kept him from racing in back-to-back passes. The record runs have to be consecutive to count.

Freyvogel commented on the track’s conditions.

“I’m expecting the course to be much better tomorrow,” he said Tuesday. “It was like running on beach sand today. It was really bad.”

Freyvogel said his goal is to get over 400 mph, and that he is disappointed he has not reached that mark. Still, he is having fun at the event.

“We’re the talk of the place, amazingly enough,” he said. “People have come out of the woodwork, have bent over backward for us and they’re making a big fuss over us. It’s interesting.”

For years Freyvogel has been attempting to set a land speed record for wheel-driven cars, and be the first to reach 500 mph. He built “Carbiliner,” which is 28 feet long, 3,000 pounds and has a 2,600 horsepower engine, with Brandon Barnhart of Harmony in 2011.

But weather has gotten in the way. In each of the past three years rain has canceled the Bonneville event.

A second planned attempt by Freyvogel in 2013 was canceled because of the federal government shutdown that year.

Freyvogel holds a Bonneville speed record with 251 mph in a Corvette, which he set in 2012.
