Middlesex Twp. home decked out for Christmas
MIDDLESEX TWP — Ann Starr admits she's out of control.
She said she's “going to have to wind down soon” the annual themed Christmases at her home that see eight rooms decorated to the hilt. “Up the ladder and down the ladder is getting to be a little bit tough.”
Starr of Middlesex Township said she has hyper-decorated for 10 Christmases because her two grown children and their families live in different states.
“When they come home for Christmas, I try to make it a real big surprise,” she said.
This year, Starr, with the help of her ever-supportive husband, Bob, has fashioned the couple's Nursery Park abode into “An Olde Fashioned Christmas.”
In addition to nearly 20 nutcrackers doubling as drummers drumming, three Christmas trees and snow that falls inside the house, Starr has hand-painted 319 different Santa figurines.
The unique Santas are made from bannister spindles, table legs, butcher block legs and other wooden accessories.
While most add to the old-fashioned festivities at her home, Starr has taken others to Quality Gardens on Route 228 for display and sale.
The Santas represent Starr's first foray into painting faces and she was so delighted with the first dozen or so that she just kept going.
“I'm just so surprised that I can do this,” Starr said. “I just love Santa and I love wood.”
The snow falling inside the house comes from snow boxes the Starrs spied at a store that was going out of business.
She said the boxes, complete with a container of chopped plastic “snow,” provided 10 hours of precipitation in the store window at Christmastime.Bob made brackets to mount the snow boxes at strategic areas on the ceiling and connected the motor to the light-switch in the living room.“When someone comes over, I just throw the switch and it's snowing,” Ann said. “It looks so pretty on the tree when it comes down.”She said she is unable to re-use the “snow,” as it mixes with the pine needles on the floor. It also falls from the hair and shoulders of guests, who then track the white stuff throughout the house.“Anybody who's a neat freak wouldn't like snow boxes,” Ann said. When it piles up too much, Ann sweeps the bulk of the snow with a broom before vacuuming the remainder.Themes of Christmases past at the Starr home have included “Icicle Storm,” “Celebrate with Disney,” “Starry Night” and “The North Pole.”
