Chester E. Dunbar
Chester E. “Buck” Dunbar, 91, of Zelienople passed away Monday in the comfort of his home.
Born Dec. 4, 1923, in Fairview, W.Va., he was the son of the late Lawrence and Marie (Johnson) Dunbar.
At an early age, Buck went to help his Aunt Nancy on her farm, where he started his first business venture of selling rhubarb and asparagus door-to-door for a nickel.
Buck proudly served as a medic in the U.S. Army during World War II and worked for the Halstead-Mitchel Co. up until his retirement in 1987. He also owned a sporting goods store on Main Street.
He was involved in several organizations, including the Zelienople-Harmony Athletic Association, the Sportsman's Club and the former Harmony VFW, where he served as a commander.
Buck was a real gentleman. He was slow to anger and quick to forgive. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, Mary, to several places out West, in Florida and at the Calgary Stampede in Canada. He was a great storyteller and inspired love and trust in people. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife, Mary Dunbar; his two sons, William (Diane) Dunbar of North Fort Myers, Fla., and Richard (Valerie) Dunbar of Zelienople; his brothers, Lawrence (Lucille) Dunbar and James (Pat) Dunbar, both of Evans City; his sister, Doris McDonald of Mars; his three grandchildren, Tracy Dunbar, Holly Smith and Brittany Dunbar; six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and one niece, Janet (Meyle) Sharp.
In addition to his parents, Buck was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
