WINFIELD TWP — A little girl remains at a Pittsburgh hospital with life-threatening injuries after almost drowning Thursday afternoon at her family’s home on Star Grille Road, authorities said.

The girl, believed to be 4 years old, was found face down in a children’s swimming pool, according to rescuers. She apparently was unresponsive but later regained consciousness.

Emergency crews described the kiddie pool as being 8 to 10 feet wide with just one foot of water in it.

The girl’s mother and several other small children were at the home when Winfield Township volunteer firefighters and Saxonburg EMS medics got there shortly after 1:15 p.m.

A medic carried the girl to the ambulance and a crew immediately started working on her. Rescuers administered oxygen and performed a nasal intubation in an attempt to clear her airway.

She apparently started coughing up water during or after the procedure. The ambulance crew tended to the girl for 15 to 20 minutes until a Life Flight emergency helicopter landed at the home next door.

The helicopter crew treated the child for at least another half-hour to get her condition stabilized before she was flown to Children’s Hospital.

Her condition was not known this morning.

She reportedly underwent a CT scan at the hospital and at one point was placed on a ventilator.

No other information about what happened was available. A man who answered the door at the home on Thursday afternoon declined to comment.
