BUTLER TWP — The Butler Township Commissioners Monday night approved a major stormwater infrastructure overhaul and awarded a $683,970 contract to a West Mifflin-based company.
Commissioners voted 3-0, with commissioners Dave Zarnick and Charles Nedz absent, to award the contract to R&B Contracting for wide-ranging work on stormwater infrastructure.
The commissioners said the work will improve roadside stormwater pipes and other underground drainage infrastructure.
The commissioners said they hope to prioritize work in some locations, such as Alameda Road and Duffy Road. Other locations where underground work will be done, such as Township Line Road, would fall lower on the priority list.
Portions of the work could be put off until 2016, commissioners said, if they can’t be completed before the beginning of the 2015-16 school year.
Township engineer Daniel Deiseroth said he wants officials to be ready for change orders and unexpected hurdles as the project progresses because of the kind of the work.
“It’s an underground project, and that’s just the nature of this type of work,” Deiseroth said.
Township officials say they have yet to schedule any of the work, but believe at least a portion could be completed by the end of the 2015 construction season.
