BAMFL chasing twin titles
BUTLER TWP — The Butler Area Midget Football League is chasing twin titles Saturday.
Butler's varsity team (7-3) defeated Pine-Richland Green, 38-20, in the United Youth Football League semifinals last weekend. The Butler Blue junior varsity squad (9-1) shut out Seneca Valley, 18-0, in the semifinal round.
Pine-Richland Green and Seneca Valley entered those games undefeated.
Butler's varsity (ages 11-12) and junior varsity (ages 9-10) will play in UYFL Super Bowl games Saturday at Shaler.
“We're definitely elated about this,” BAMFL president Jason Rees said. “This is the first time we' ve had two teams advance to the Super Bowl since we joined this league.”
Butler's varsity is defending UYFL Super Bowl champion. The BAMFL joined the UYFL six years ago.
Butler's varsity will play Pine-Richland White at 5 p.m. Saturday. The Butler Blue junior varsity will play Mars at 2:30 p.m.
“We've got a group of coaches who have worked very hard for this,” Rees said. “Starting each February, we've had monthly or bi-monthly meetings involving all of the coaches.
“We got on the same page as the high school coaching staff three or four years ago — using the same system and terminology as they do — and we've stayed consistent that way. It's paying off in the youth program now.
“The kids are winning a lot more and excitement in the program continues to build,” he added.
Butler's varsity turned the tables on Pine Green last week after dropping a 28-6 decision to that squad in the regular season.
“That game was 6-6 entering the fourth quarter and it just got away from us,” Butler varsity coach Jason Butler said. “Our kids just excelled in this game. They wanted it more.
“I could tell in practice all week ... The right attitude was there.”
Butler has been coaching the same group of kids for three years now.
“It was a complete team win,” he said. “We were prepared and the kids executed. Because we all work, the varsity coaches pick one night a week and go over film from 6 p.m. to midnight to get the kids ready.
“It's all for the kids. We want to put them in the best possible position to win. We were up 32-6 at halftime. Offense, defense, tackling ... It was just a great effort.”
Butlers mites (ages 7-8) had their season ended at 7-3 Saturday with an 18-0 loss to Highlands.
