BAMFL claims Super Bowl again
For the second time in as many seasons, the Butler Area Midget Football League has produced a varsity Super Bowl champion.
Butler's varsity (ages 11-12) held on to defeat Pine-Richland White, 22-20, recently in the United Youth Football League's Super Bowl game at the Shaler High School field.
“We had two varsity teams last year and our other team won the championship then,” Butler varsity coach Jason Butler explained. “My team also made the playoffs last year, but got knocked out in the first round.”
Not this time.
Butler finished this season at 8-2, winning three postseason games.
“Pine-Richland (White) beat us 33-0 in our last regular season game,” Butler said. “At this point in the season, we knew what they were gonna do and they knew what we were gonna do.
“This was just a case of which team wanted it more.”
Butler trailed P-R White 12-6 in the first half before rallying to take a 22-12 lead into halftime. Quarterback Braylon Littlejohn rushed for touchdowns of 1 and 10 yards. He threw an 80-yard scoring pass to Deshawn Cox.
“They were stuffing our run pretty good, so we started airing it out and made some plays,” Butler said.
P-R White scored “on a trick play” in the third quarter, Butler said. His team held on from there.
Butler's roster had 31 players this season. The coach lauded the play of defensive linemen Vance Summerville, Derek Snyder and A.J. Baker.
“They got the ball around the 50 or our 45 a few times in the fourth quarter, but our defense kept them out,” Butler said. “Our entire defense played well.
Butler's junior varsity (ages 9-10) also finished the season 8-2, dropping a 25-8 decision to Mars in the JV Super Bowl. Both of the junior varsity's losses were to Mars this season.
