Butler man sentenced to prison for incest
A Butler man was sentenced Tuesday to serve 22 to 48 months in prison and ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life after pleading guilty to incest of a minor for abusing a 9-year-old girl in 2018 when he was 16 years old.
Michael Kopp, 21, was sentenced in accordance with a plea agreement reached between the county district attorney’s office and the public defender who represented him.
His sentence, ordered by Common Pleas Judge Kelley Streib, includes 60 months of probation after his release from the county jail, a $500 fine and lifetime registration with state police as a Tier 3 sexual offender under Megan’s Law.
Butler City police filed seven charges against Kopp in April 2021 when ChildLine relayed a report to county detectives after the accuser's mother found journal entries about the sexual assault, according to charging documents.
According to police, the girl told reported that Kopp had sex with her multiple times and committed other sexual or lewd acts.
He initially was charged with two counts of rape of a child, incest of a minor, aggravated indecent assault, indecent assault of a person under 13 years old, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child and sexual assault. The involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child and sexual assault charges were withdrawn at a preliminary hearing in August 2021.
Due to his sexual offender status, Kopp was ordered to register with state police and report monthly to provide his address, employment information, vehicle ownership, phone number and internet identification.
He also was ordered to comply with the county adult probation office’s sexual offender regulations, which include no contact with the victim and sex offender counseling.
