ADAMS TWP — An Evans City resident Tuesday night expressed his concern to the Mars School Board about a planned housing development.

Ernie Kuhs of Woodford Drive spoke about the development’s potential effects on school buses.

“The buses actually dragged on the ground because of the steepness of the grade,” Kuhs said. “The reason past plans were denied was because they (developers) needed to seek an alternative form of entrance and exit to the plan or remedy the grade and other issues, which they were unable to do.”

Gary Peaco, township code enforcement officer, said the current plan went before the township planning commission in July. However, the vote for a recommendation was tabled because of outstanding items.

He said the biggest issue is bus access.

“Spring Drive is difficult for buses because they drag (on the ground),” Peaco said. “The developer is contemplating doing improvements on Spring Drive to allow buses to come up.”

The development will have more than 45 houses by Barrington Homes on about 60 acres east of Woodford and Lynwood drives.

Peaco said that property has been considered by developers for several years, but school bus access has been a major issue. He said another goal is for buses to not have to stop on Mars-Evans City Road to pick up students.

The plan will be discussed and possibly voted on in September by the planning commission. Then it would need approval from the township supervisors.

Superintendent Wesley Shipley said district officials have talked with developers about the bus issue.

“We have been made privy to the fact that the plan is coming,” Shipley said Tuesday evening. “There is concern with buses being able to pull into that road. I don’t know where we are with that.”
