High-speed chase ends in crash, charges for Butler woman

A vehicle theft, police pursuit and eventual crash resulted in felony charges for a Butler woman, according to charges filed by city police Monday.

Samantha L. Walker, 25, was charged with felony theft, misdemeanors eluding an officer, accidents involving a vehicle and driving under the influence following a Friday incident.

Police said the vehicle Walker was driving struck six vehicles before she was taken into custody.

Police said around 11 a.m., a Dodge Ram truck was reported stolen from a residence in Butler. The owner told officers he started his vehicle and went back to his residence when a woman, later identified as Walker, was seen driving it away at a high rate of speed.

The truck was spotted by Slippery Rock Borough Police Department 10 minutes later in Clay Township, traveling on Route 8 south. According to charging documents, city police were stationed on North Main Street hill when the truck was seen again.

Police said Walker failed to obey a traffic stop and accelerated down the hill. A police pursuit ensued, during which Penn and Middlesex Township police departments reported the vehicle moving at 100 mph and weaving in and out of traffic on Route 8 south.

According to previous reports, Walker ran a red light at the intersection of Route 228 West and Route 8 South, striking a vehicle turning left from Route 228 to Route 8 North.

Walker continued south on Route 8, striking five more vehicles in the intersection, police said.

The intersection was closed for about two hours while the damaged vehicles were removed. Police said they had stopped pursuing the vehicle near Country Kitchen on Route 8 prior to the crash.

Walker and a few other drivers of the crashed vehicles were injured. Only one person was transported to the hospital, police said.

Upon taking her into custody, Walker told officers she used heroin prior to driving.

A report of Walker rear-ending a vehicle during the high-speed chase was received by officers shortly after the crash.

As of Monday, a preliminary hearing for Walker wasn’t scheduled.
